Obituary of Melita Smith, New Waterford

We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our dear wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. Melita Smith passed away unexpectedly June 16th, 2022 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. She was born, raised and lived all her 77 years in New Waterford, Cape Breton. She is the daughter of the late Hugh Joseph Young and Mary Melita Campbell. Melita grew up on Hinchey Avenue and staying close to her roots, resided just down the road not far from the original family homestead. After graduating high school, Melita went on to attend the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital School for Nursing Assistants and in 1964 was amongst the first graduating class of the hospital. Melita always put others needs before hers. When she started her own family, she traded in her nursing uniform to become a full-time mother, teacher, mentor, provider and best friend to her four cherished children. Melita was an excellent cook and baker, always having a cup of tea ready and something to go with it. You always left the house a little heavier than when you went in. Melita is survived by her loving husband of 57 years, Henry Smith; their children, Joseph (Moncton), Noreen (New Waterford), Lisa and son-in-law, Mark LeCouter (Coxheath), Janet and son-in- law, Bruce Fraser (New Waterford); two grandchildren, Morgan LeCouter and Harland Fraser. Melita is also survived by her siblings, Frances Crawford (late Hugh Crawford), Delbert Young (Jean), Margaret Jacobsen (Alex); several nieces, nephews and in-laws. As well as her parents, Melita was predeceased by a granddaughter, Paige Fraser. The family would like to thank all those who came to her aid including the Paramedics, as well as the Doctors and Nurses of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. Visitation will be held on Monday, June 20, from 7-9 pm in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith Street, New Waterford. A Funeral Mass of celebration will be held on Tuesday, June 21, at 10 am in the Parish Church of St. Leonard, Mount Carmel Ave., New Waterford, with Father Jim Oliver officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Carmel Cemetery. Family flowers only. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the SPCA or a charity of your choice. Masks are encouraged.
