Obituary of Rene Coakley
With heavy hearts we announce the passing of (Doreen) Rene Coakley, 94, at the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital on Monday, November 28, 2016. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family in England from where she arrived in Halifax at Pier 21, meeting her forever partner, Robert Coakley (Bob).
Born in London, England, she was a daughter of the late Jonah and Elizabeth (Howarth) Taylor.
Rene leaves behind to mourn her three daughters, Eileen (Don Ohorodynk), Laurie (Bobby Gillis) and Sharon Coakley; one son, John Coakley (Laurie). She was so proud of her grandchildren, Joseph (Courtney), Myrna (Josh), Suzanne (James), Dean (Jade), Bobby (Julia) and Jonathan (Krista); great-grandchildren Jacob, William, Rachel, Alora, and Sebastian and Nora; special daughter-in-law, Colleen Coakley.
It would be remiss not to mention her extended family, the War Brides, who have always maintained a close friendship and weekly luncheon date.
Rene loved to bake and I'm sure many will remember her shortbread cookies. She bowled, and a dance around any room always took her fancy. She worked in the British Land Core army before coming to Canada.
Rene was predeceased by her husband, Robert and her eldest son, Bobby, at the tender age of 16.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place, as per her wishes, under the care and direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, New Waterford. A funeral mass of celebration will be held on Saturday, December 3, 2016 at 10 a.m. in the Parish Church of St. Leonard, Mount Carmel Avenue, with Father Ray Huntley officiating. Burial will be in Mount Carmel Cemetery with a luncheon to follow at the Army, Navy, Airforce, Unit 217, New Waterford. Online expressions of sympathy may be sent to the family at: www.vjmcgillivray.ca.
